Does Your Dance Studio Website Need a Blog?

I have worked with some really wonderful studio owners. After working together, they’ve seen successes such as:

-Being the number 1 search result in a major city just two months after opening

-15% increase in enrollment in one month

-Successfully opening a studio and nonprofit during economic downturn and increasing the student body each year since.

-Securing funding for annual performances through donations and increased ticket sales.

But there is one piece of advice that I can’t convince anyone to follow through with.

That is…having a blog.

Let me be the first to say we listen and we don’t judge. Blogging sounds time consuming. Sometimes it is forgotten. Even I have been off and on with my blog since 2013. However, the reason that I pick it up time and time again is that blog posts drive traffic to my website!

Why have and maintain a blog for your dance studio?

Reason #1. A blog can be used to drive to traffic to your website.

Social media is great, but it takes time to create, is quickly consumed, and then forgotten. You have to be persistent to cut through the noise and consistent with posting and interacting with your audience to remain top of mind. Above all, you have to have quality content that educates, informs, inspires, and/or entertains.

When you write a blog post, it may take you a longer period of time to create. This is okay, because it has a significantly longer shelf life than an average social media post. Through your writing, you can directly address the questions and concerns that your potential leads are asking search engines.

Reason #2. A blog can help you to establish your studio as an authority on dance in your area.

As dancers, we like to focus on dancing. But, when we talk about dance or write about dance, we have the opportunity to level up.

If you can thoughtfully answer the burning questions that your leads are asking, you can position your school as the go-to studio.

Answer how-tos, offer quick tutorials, explain your teaching methods, provide information to parents/customers.

Tip: Don’t forget to give readers and option to sign up and hear more from you studio via email.

Reason #3. A blog can help you to establish your studio brand.

For the new customer, the first impression of your brand will either come from social media or your website. Assuming they’re into it, they’ll read more. Blogging gives you a chance to get personal with them and give them a feel for the atmosphere in your studio.

Are you a recreation studio encouraging students to have fun?
Training students for professional careers?
Helping adults take a break from their day jobs?
Serving underprivileged dancers and providing an expressive outlet?

Regardless of the focus of your studio, you have a chance to share more about your brand through your messaging.

Reason #4. A blog can keep your current families engaged in your studio.

Use your blog to share a copy of your studio newsletter, to celebrate special events, or to make quick announcements. You can give a behind the scenes look at upcoming performances or works in progress.

Tip: If you create behind the scenes content for social media, share it on your blog as well!

Reason #5. Save time.

Do you find yourself answering emails with the same question over and over again? Share links of how-to blogs or blogs that answer frequently asked questions to save time in responding to emails.

Additionally, a post can incorporate links and forms to allow readers to sign up for mailing lists, purchase tickets for shows, donate, or buy merchandise.

If you prefer to talk rather than write, here’s a quick way to do both:

  1. Record yourself either on video or audio only.

  2. Download the audio from the video or audio file.

  3. Upload the file to a transcription service.

  4. Review the transcription and edit as needed.

  5. Post!

By doing this, you have two methods to communicate with your leads and studio families- written and audio!
